Timpani exercise nr. 5

[ Explanation 1 ]

The rhythmic idea as we see it in the first line is all there is to know for this exercise. First study this line and get your stickings right.
In the second line we see how the main idea is compressed to fit in a 4/4 bar. In the exercise itself this is alternated with one bar of normal 4/4 playing. This means that the same pattern shifts over the barline a few times, but you have to stay with the same sticking you used for the first line.
In the exercise the 5 against 4 rhythm is written differently:

[ Explanation 2 ]

By writing it in this manner, it is easier to follow were the beat of the 4/4 bar falls in relation to the 5:4 rhythm. This way of notating 5 against 4 is a little bit odd, but I didn't want to clutter the exercise with a 5:4 symbol over every group. It looks much cleaner this way, it's easy to see what is meant, and now you can start to practice!
Enjoy!
